I'm 17. Got a loan through my parents credit, and slowly, but surely paying it off with all of my own hard earned money.

I learned a few valuable lessons buying a car like this at my age:

1) Do research. I didn't, and got screwed royally, and am now "stuck" with my purchase. I love it to death, but paid WAY too much for it.

2) Make sure you have "play" money. My car payment is $434/month for 5 years. I have a very steady job and make around $6-700/month. So if you decide to buy one soon, make sure you can still be a kid .

3) Don't think you're invincible and take turns crazy fast in the wet, you won't win . Luckily I saved it from the curb.

Finally, I say go for it. Unless you have to move out when you're 18, it's logically good to buy one now, while you can live at home for free, and have no REAL expenses such as a house, cable, gas/electric. But on the flip side.. get ready to fork out serious cash per month, like I am.

Good luck!

thats gotta be alot of fun, congratz. But i think ill save for more important things in my future, not to mention my parents wouldn't let me buy such a car. Glad to see it's working for you though, you earned it.

a vehicle (total price - not any payment bs) should not be more than .5x of salary (yearly)

better, it should not be more than .4x of salary

ideally, shouldnt be more than .25x

thats something thats farrr too distant for you to worry about

I just turned 20 and I own my 2006 S2000. This is the third car financed the previous two have been payed off. I wouldnt suggest jumping into it at that age. The other thing is make sure your research is correct because based off of the expense numbers you were posting early those numbers were way off from real world numbers. My recomendation is buy a beater car out right without a loan and collect some cash. Once you feel comfortable enough to carry a large auto loan then do it. At times I still feel the dent my S has cost my wallet but I can manage.

PS Dont fall into credit card debt!!!!!!

just work hard and save all the money u can. i saved up all thru high school, working two or three jobs at any given time, sold my integra gsr my senior year in high school and purchased a used s2000. im 19 now and in the military. as of now, ive managed to only owe about 3000 on my s2000. and i still have money left over for whatever. not much, but i cant complain. at all. to me its worth it. getting an s2000 is not unrealistic. just dont be one of those ricers or idiots on the road when you do get an s2k. and dont buy one if youre not ready for it yet.

That doesn't seem too unrealistic to me, I bought my S2K when I was 20.

1. Do well in school. Or at least try.

2. Pick a career in demand and in an area of interest with some regards to pay. Hope by the time you graduate, you make >$35K.....especially in a few years, 35K won't be anything. Heck it isn't anything to be proud of today . You are not shooting for the stars so you are ok.

3. Do well in college. Don't worry about cars. Just worry about keeping up the grades and getting laid. Trust me, girls could careless what you drive when you live on campus.

4. S2000's may be a thing of the past when you graduate. Stop dreaming about the car now, if you can't really touch one for a few more years. There are more important things in life at your age I wish I did more of. Getting laid in highschool was on the top of my list.

5. We are car nuts. We all dream about owning nice cars. You are not alone--misery loves company.
