Default MPG and RPM's

Being a relatively new owner of a stock MY01 I wanted to double check a few things with my fellow s2k owners. With OEM gears, the car revs at 3500rpms going 65 in 6th gear. Is this pretty standard for all the AP1's? I also drive pretty spirited and usually can only squeak 250 - 265 miles per tank. Reading about people hitting 300+ miles on a tank seems outta my reach. Just wanted to make sure my engine is revving and runnning as it should be. Thanks.

Sounds completely normal.

Most AP1's get 22-28 mpg in normal driving, the most you can expect on a highway only trip with a bone stock car on the proper size tires at the right pressure...is 30-33 mpg.

These cars are made to run high rpms, they love running 4-5K rpms on the highway.

agreed, i get about 250 - 260 a tank nad have run a full tank on the highway to average 24.9MPG running at the speed limit in 5th gear instead of 6th(advised it gets better mpg this way) My original window sticker indicates 26MPG highway

Where are you coming up with this? 5th gear on the highway at 55-70 mph?

My best tank of gas was 33 MPG(over 350 miles on the tank before the low fuel mark)

I achieved this bone stock at 65-70 mph in 6th gear with the top up and no A/C just windows open. Since then the best I could get was about 30MPG highway but it will get that every time.

EDIT: Just noticed you have 18" wheels. That probably reduces your fuel economy.

What rpm's do you guys usually shift at? I hear some guys say they never get above 4 grand and I think that is insane...

Whoever told you to run in 5th is completely wrong. Higher revs = higher fricition = lower gas mileage. That's why all those big displacement V8s are able to get decent hwy gas milege; they only spin like 1500-2000rpms at 80mph with a big overdrive 6th gear.

4 grand is the right shift point for "normal" driving to get the best gas mileage...also if you are light on the throttle up to each shift point you will get much better mileage. If you are driving spirited it is not fair to the S2000 to shift below redline!

also if you are light on the throttle up to each shift point you will get much better mileage.
You are increasing pumping losses by keeping the throttle opening small. So you want to be heavy on the throttle.

Depending on the ECU of a car and when it richens the mixture, the best gas mileage is achieved by applying 70-90% throttle and get to top gear ASAP without lugging the engine.

Following the shift points called out in the owner's manual while applying ~3/4 will result in the best fuel economy, while not pissing off drivers around you.
