My Mom's 1950 Chevy had a start button on the dashboard. Didn't stop the engine either. But would propel the car if it was in gear. Watched some old video on Youtube where they moved a stalled car off railroad tracks with the starter. GM cars in that era could have the engine switched off and the key removed without locking the ignition. Just turn the switch and run, no key needed other than to unlock the switch.
