A couple of weeks ago I found and removed the shipping blocks from the front springs of the 2001 model that I bought recently. It really helped reduce understeer. My co-driver also found shipping blocks in his MR2 when he replaced the shocks. Same story. Car pushed really bad with the blocks in.
Check the springs and get the blocks out if you want decent handling.
