Default noob ? Can a gearbox break or wear out?

if you grind gears enough or treat the gearbox roughly, can it break? if so, which part breaks and is it costly to fix?

thanks

I can't tell which one of you is the . Mr. "I've been here for years and have a high PPD" asking "can something break?" or Mr. "The gearbox is connected to the tranny".

Skip shifting can kill your tranny.
So can FI.

Must be an S2000 thing. I've been skip shifting my 2000 Celica GTS for over 155k miles and the transmission is still as smooth as butter - in any gear, at any temperature.

Ya, i think "skip shifting can KILL your tranny" is too broad of a statement, if you engage the clutch right and dont bounce all over the place why would it make any difference? Also the carbon synchros in the ap2 are pretty sturdy, just dont drive like a tard in an Ap1 with brass synchros and you should be fine.

i said it was a noob question. why the hate?

there's the occasional grind every other month, but just wondering if it's an item that generally needs to be replaced or should it last for the life of the car?

The problem is that the tolerances on this tranny are tighter so the extra wear of slowing the gearing on a skip shift will accelerate the wear. People have reported being locked out of a gear because of this - try the search.

If you double clutch, and i'm not suggesting you do, you can skip shift to your hearts content as the gearing is already at the proper speed.

Going from 2nd to 5th means the 5th syncro does a lot more 'slowing down' than form 4th to 5th.

I'm not completely sure which part you would need to replace, but the gearbox is directly connected to the tranny....so hopefully you wouldn't have to replace the whole tranny =)

Its very easy to beat the synchros in the S2000 transmission, and as the transmission ages, it gets rougher. Its normal behavior, just don't rush your shifts.
