Oil Temp.
 

Hey Guys,

Has anyone ever looked into the oil temp that is reached by our engines during long track sessions? Since we don't have an oil temp gauge, there is no way for us to know how hot these oils get. Anything above 260 degrees, the oil starts to breakdown and loses its ability to lube the engine. Since we don't ever hear of our cars hitting limp mode or anything like that at the tracks, i'm assuming it's ok but prolonged operation at 260+ degrees is NOT good for the longevity of the car. Has anyone looked into this?

What are you talking about? Do you mean putting an oil temp gauge under the hood so that for occasional use you can look at it? Or do you mean having an oil pressure gauge in general because there are tons of people who put aftermarket oil pressure gauges in their car.

Neither. Where and how you put what gauge has nothing to do with what i'm concerned with.

He is talking about a oil temp gauge, not under the hood but in the dash where it belongs. Oil temp is actually much more important than water temp.

My other car has both water and oil temp gauges along with oil pressure. In that car I can see that the coolant is up to temp LONG before the oil is. No revving to 8,500RPM until the oil is hot, water will be hot in a mile or 2, but oil takes 7 or 8 miles.

I have seen S2000's with a oil temp gauge in them so it is made, if you want to know what temp your oil is at the track you will have to get kind of gauge.

i hope someone who's installed it chimes in with how hot they get.

op wants to know how hot the oil gets...either during normal usage or during track usage...
anybody with a gauge should be able to answer this one...
