Default rattle at VTEC

I've been noticing lately (~13K miles) with the top up and at WOT VTEC I'm hearing a metallic rattling noise from 8K - 9K in 1st and 2nd gear. Can't really tell where it's coming from, but I would guess it's on the center to right side of the cockpit.
The UK folks had a brief thread on this a week or so ago but with no real conclusion. Is this something that could be a concern, or just a rattle that I can deal with??? I'm not noticing any other signs of problems, mileage is good, oil consumption normal, no felt decrease in the butt dyno etc.

interesting....i have that too....

i think it's my cd-changer, or something in the trunk, or something in the glove box....along those lines....

mine seems to be coming from the passenger/rearward side of the cabin as well....

I have the same thing, too. I thought maybe it was something in the car that made noise at a certain vibration (I was going to empty everything form the car to check)...

Yo, I have this problem too. But only when it is cold out. There is this little rattling noise.

Mine is on the middle right side,i would say.

Is couldn't be bent valves could it? My buddy told me if previous owners went past RL or misshifted, the valves could be bent. I sure hope not.

But i do not really hear the noise when it is warm out.

Answers?

We've discussed this before. I believe that the board's concensus was that the sound is coming from vibration in the engine at high RPM's. Most engines don't rev up this high so that makes sense. It may be a piece of metal that is vibrating just a bit to get that ringing sound. Nothing bad has come out it yet. So don't worry about it. Especially since there are owners on this board who have put over 75,000 miles on their engine.

It is normal, your engine being the high revving monser that it is causes the vibration sound. It is healthy, not a bad thing. Keep on VTECing!!

Mine did this and it was the header heat shield. It's just to the right of center as you describe. Look under the hood and see if it is close to rubbing on any other metal parts. When the engines moves under load it can rub and vibrate, push the heat shield toward the engine and it will bend away from metal contacts if this is indeed some of your guys' problem noise source. It's worth a try.
