Tow it away to strip for parts is one way to do it. Its not easy to hotwire a modern car, which is why older Honda and Toyota are the most stolen cars (old enough to predate chipped key technology, reliable enough to still be enough around to create a demand for the parts).

Video captured by city and Reading High School surveillance cameras show Torres-Rosado getting behind the wheel of the black 2001 Honda S2000 and Tirado-Ramos and another man pushing the car west on Douglass Street, according to court documents.

However, when you're on a road trip in your S, it is not always possible to park in a locked garage overnight. How do you get around "NEVER"? I've spent the night at friends across town or out of state from time to time, or at a motel along the route. A locked garage is not always available. It's street parking, only sometimes. What precautions can I take in those circumstances?
Quite easy. Take your spouse / GF's car, family car, or rent a car. Every time I fly out of Miami I rent a car for $30, drive to the airport, and drop it. Same when I get home. S stays in my garage and away from thieves.
I met up with a bunch of other S2000 owners up there, went on local drives in the car, and then took a leisurely 6 day drive back down the coast from Tillamook to Malibu. Did I worry about the car at night? Yes. Particularly in Eureka. But I made the decision I had taken all the precautions I reasonably could, and now it was down to fate and trust. Had I taken any other car, I would not have enjoyed the trip anywhere near as much as I did.

You just make a choice and you live with it. Some choose one way, some choose another, and each person has to suit himself.

Shame! I'm planning on driving up the coast and heading towards Ohio to visit friends and family. I spent 3 years in Humboldt growing up, and things have gone downhill there recently. A hardtop might be in my future so I can sleep at night.

As far as vehicle thefts, it's a part of the society we live in. There are things we can do to prevent them but if somebody really wants your car, they will take it.

Pretty much.

It's all just *stuff* anyway. Sure, no one wants to lose their stuff, but it is all just stuff. Get good insurance, enjoy your stuff, do what you can without letting it become an obsession, and live.

So how do you define "good" insurance?

I don't. The person purchasing it does. You decide what you want covered and how much so that if your *stuff* gets stolen you are reasonably happy with the outcome after insurance does what you are paying for it to do.

I thought insurance companies wouldn't be investigating for this long...

When my brother called his car gone they said they'll look for it and whatever, he never heard from them again, but got his insurance money.

If there is reason enough for them to continue looking, they will. Could be potential inside job, fraud, or other reasons to avoid just writing it off.
