Don't feel bad Zach, I read it the same way at first. Until I got to the SUVs and saw the Hummer and GMC products. Then I knew it had to be "worst".
Nice that others are publishing the facts about our car. Sometimes reading this site one would think that the S is full of problems. Quite to the contrary. Joser Silver/Red |
I have had more failures on my S2000 than most of the dozens of new cars I have purchased. Granted it is worked pretty hard, but it also has seen alot of shop time. I really question if these statistics are compiled from comparable samples and evaluated on a even basis.
My car has had numerous transmission and clutch problems, fiascos with the MAP sensor, O2 sensor issues, the dash replaced, the window replaced, holes developing in the top, and a host of nits that I fixed myself. I would never rate is as tops in reliability. |
My 02 has been perfect. Oil changes only and its driven hard at times.
|
I have to admit, the S2000 has its 'quirks' that it seems most cars have. Most of them are not major, but they are annoying.
After owning an M3 before the S2000, I have to say that this car has still had FAR less shop time in the >1.5 years I've owned it compared to the 9 months I owned my M3. These cars ARE also driven extremely hard for the most part. I AutoCross mine regularly (my Fiancee also runs it with me as a two-driver car), and it never misses a beat. I've had the 2nd gear grind issue, but after fighting Honda a bit on that one, the problem is now 100% cured and hasn't come back since. I'm happy. It's not a Civic when it comes to reliability, but it's also being asked to do 3x what any Civic on the road is asked to do, performance-wise. |
cdelena,
I wonder what kind of condition your Vette would be in, if you had it instead of the S? |
Every car from every manufacturer isn't going to be perfect.
I'm sure there are people out there who have a ford Taurus without problems while there are people out there with honda civics who had to envoke to the lemon law. But when you buy a honda/toyota the chances of getting a faulty car are diminished (but not erased). I personally have never had a problem with my s2000. |

The serial # on my car was only a few #'s different from cdelena's and in the two and a half years I owned it it spent more time in the shop than my "lemon" 1985 C4 Corvette did. cdelena and I had almost all of the same problems so maybe our cars were just built on a bad day. Whatever the case was I couldn't trust my car and I felt like Honda wanted to place the blame where it didn't belong so I traded the car. That said, I loved the car and I might buy another one -- someday. |
Cool - glad someone posted this. I printed out the chart, and it sits in the middle of my Honda showroom right now!
Feel sorry for our Chevrolet neighbors (not to mention Volkswagen) |

Does it even matter? I tell everyone the car is slow and has shitty reliability. That way at least one less person will have an S2000. :)
And maybe just maybe Honda will quit making them. Maybe not. :( |

kind of off topic, but the Accord wasn't on the list. I thought they were always near the top.

The S2000 and Accord made Edmund's top 10:

My C5 Vette which I had for two years was perfect. So far (6mos) my S2000 has been perfect. My '94 Miata (purchased new) has been perfect.....all 3 driven hard at times, a lot depends on luck and how you treat them.

The H2 landed in the poopoo because people bitched about the awful fuel mileage. Understandable but what did they expect from a large block with 4WD and a 6L. engine? |

CR auto ratings are a joke. I wouldn't use the rag to wipe my ass. Why is the Toyota 4runner in both the best and worst category? Is the difference in engines that substantial? So they're comparing a 3/4-ton chassis, body-on-frame truck (H2) against a car-based mini-ute (CRV, RAV4, etc) - not exactly apples to apples.
|
Moreover, they are providing a binary data point, either the car is good or bad with no underlying statistics broken down into categories to substantiate the claim. The title of the post, S2000 is most reliable is undoubtedly incorrect, however one could say the S2000 is on average more reliable than the Corvette and I don't think many of us here would disagree.
|
I think CR is probably the most unbiased information you can find. That said, you can always pick holes in any sort of survey.
The question is not whether or not one particular report is 100% accurate, but rather whether or not that report is more statistically likely to be accurate in comparison to other reports. Now, who else you got besides CR to tell whether or not a car is likely to be reliable? |
