replacement of rear window (plastic)
 

the rear window in my 2000MY is scratched and cloudy, so i went to my local, trusty ole tap plastics to ask if they had any product to clean it up. they said that they did, but all these type of products don't really work all that well. instead, they suggested replacing the window, and offered to sell me the plastic and some glue appropriate for the job (they checked out my top to insure the window was glued in, not sewn). total cost around $30. does anyone have experience with doing this? its certainly appealing, since its a whole lot cheaper than a new top (> $750), and should provide better visibility than my current window. (the other option is to always go very fast, so you don't care what's behind you ;-)

Give it a try and report to us. If it was this cheap and this easy, hundreds of S2000 owners would have done this before you and it would have been posted here already.
The plastic window is "manufactured" into the rear window section. This section can be replaced but quite a bit of labour and work.
You can use a bit of elbow grease and buff out the haze and yellowing of the plastic window. Then you can polish it up and protect with static cling window tint so that you'll not need to do this again for a very long time.
Go to the top of Under the Hood and look in the thread, "FAQs ....................... ". There, you will find a link to a thread where it shows you how to bring back a bad looking window and then protect it.

if i were you, i would just replace the top to the glass top... i have a friend who had plastic and swapped to glass window and he doesn't regret spending the money... you don't want to have to replace the plastic everytime do you?

I've seen the rear window buffed out to almost perfectly clear conditions from bad hazey conditions. I would try with the polish first. Any sort of gluing or cutting with the top is bound to end up in some sort of leaky mess. well, i think that xviper was right. if it were this easy, everyone would have done it. (i have a file i have kept in my office for years titled "it sounded to good to be true, and it was.") so i didn't hack my old window to try to replace it, but instead i bought some meguier's cleaner and polish (http://www.meguiars.com/estore/produ...ectionID=58101) and they worked reasonably well. so, before you destroy the integrity of your top and cause leaking and god-knows-what-else, try the plastic care products. thx, xviper, for preventing me from doing something stupid.

I think the store was trying to up their sale. Most windows will buff out eventually.
