Running on Fumes - Managing the End of Your Gas Tank
#13
1. 2002 S2000 (20mpg sports car)
2. Light comes on around 10 gallons, so 3.2 gallons left in the tank, or about 60 miles until empty.
3. I usually go to 225 miles before refueling. I usually put in around 11 gallons.
4. I've gone 275 miles on a tank and had 1 gallon leftover, could have gone another 20 miles.
1. 2010 Prius (50mpg urban beater)
2. Light comes on around 9 gallons, so 2.9 gallons left in the tank, or about 150 miles until empty.
3. I always go to 500 miles before refueling. I usually put in around 10 gallons.
4. I've gone 535 miles on a tank and had 1 gallon leftover, could have gone another 50 miles.

First off we all know that the s2000 gas tank guage is absolute garbage. It's so inaccurate. I used to let it drop pretty close to empty before filling up. Now that I'm superhcarged I never let go below a quarter. Most of the time I'll fill up around half a tank. It's bad for your fuel pumps to run it low on gas, especially these finicky aftermarket pumps

On my 02:
Light came on religiously at 10.5 gallons.
I've run the car to the point of sputtering and almost dying while going up a very very minor incline.
Made it to a gas station while panicking the entire time and put 12.4 gallons in.

I wouldn't worry much about sediment in the fuel tank. I bought a fuel tank this year from a 2003 MY S2000, it was about 25% full of fuel, and you have to take it apart to empty the tank as there is no drain on it. To my surprise there was zero sediment at the bottom of the tank. There was zero rust on the inside of the tank. The inside of the tank was very shiny, almost too shiny. It looked amazing for an 11 year old tank. These tanks are very well made, and fuel must be well filtered before it goes into the tank.

The chances of there being sediments in your gas tank is very unlikely. It's almost a myth for these cars. Even if there were, the fuel filter would have caught it. I've opened up many car's fuel filter and many of them look new even after 100K miles. When you drive your car around, the fuel gets sloshed around anyways. If there were sediments, it would have been moving around and about in your tank just by driving.

Yes, those bars go away rediculously quick, but its lying. There is way more fuel than the gauge tells you at that point.
The gauge is only accurate when it shows full tank. Any other reading is not accurate. 3/4 bars is not 3/4 tank, 1/2 is not 1/2, empty is not empty (well, eventually empty is accurate...)

I have an '02. Gas light means I have about 3 gallons left, giving me around 60 miles of city range. I've never put in more than 10.8 gallons and I usually wait till the light goes on before I start going for gas.
