S2000 2003 went for over 73K!!
 

Today at the Mecum Auction [left]a 2003 S2000 with 885 miles sold for $67k plus 10% buyer premium. Two guys started bidding against each other, a seller’s dream!!.. wow. ( Does that mean all clean low mile S2000’s just went up 20K??

now, now, people- this is an outlier on the bell curve. There is no way in hell the car will be driven. Just like that all original GT350 from 50 yrs ago meticulously restored and pampered, an automotive speculator bought this I'll bet. That being said, this has made all those other fat (do you lift, bro?) speculators in Hawaiian shirts poke their head up out of the crowd - they'll be buying those very low mileage examples up for a premium. Unfortunately, those low mileage cars haven't been enjoyed as they were meant to- maybe as art, but not as a conveyance around the autocross, track, or road tour.

my 71K mile 2003 is only worth a fraction of this and I have no illusions about its true worth.

as it only has 885 miles on it for a
15 year car and now it will be another”garage queen” that will not be driven or enjoyed. I spoke to the owner and he had bought it from a friend who was ill and was unable to drive the car. The reason it went so high was their were at least two bidders who were bidding against each other and I believe ego or brain freeze won out. This is double what the current market is for this car and it didn’t even have RED interior or an OEM hardtop!![left]Bottom line, this car does not set a new value for our S2000’s, and I feel sorry for the new owner as he will not be able to enjoy “drive” his new purchase and will only be able to dust it off in his garage

It may give someone ammunition dealing with an insurance company for a total loss.

If someone has the money to spend over $70K on an S2000 then I have a hard time feeling sorry for them as I'm sure they could pick up a couple of $30K beaters if they wanted to.

70k is a lot but it's not astronomical. There are several owners that are probably about that much $ into their current S2000 builds. I was watching a YouTube vid of some guy with a very low CR who was at least 70k into his.
I'd say this auction case is double what the car is worth on the normal market - but at auction when egos are flaring "magic" can happen and for a seller that is the ideal situation. There are plenty of items that sell for way more than they are worth at auction BUT there are WAY more items that sell for much less than they are worth. It depends on who's buying that day. Who knows if this guy will drive it or not. Personally I don't understand buying ANY vehicle and not driving it - wasn't that what it was designed to do? In 20 years when cars are driving (and crashing) themselves, a pristine 800 mile S2000 may be worth much more than 70k??
