S2000 for college student?
My son is a soon to go off to college and I would like to help him purchase a car. He has saved plenty of money but still needs some financial help from me. I am glad to do this because of his excellent grades and scholarships. My question is, is a S2000 a proper car for a college student to have? Is it livable as a daily driver? And finally is it affordable for a college student? Any input would be much appreciated.

really there is no clear cut answer to this question. i am a college student and i am going to be getting one of these cars. i am coming from an rx-7 so this is an economy car to me gas wise and i also know that i can live with only 2 seats, i actually prefer it that way. and i also have a very good paying job as a computer programmer and graphic artist, so i know that for me this is an affordable car as far as costs after purchase go and practicality. it all comes down to your son. will he be able to live with only two seats and very limited storage? will he have any source of income? there are many variable factors to consider. good luck with it all and i hope it works out for you both.

Don't do it. The S is not a car for someone without a lot of driving experience. There are so many threads here of young drivers who wrecked their S due to lack of experience. Also where does he attend school? The S is not a good car to drive in snow or ice.
Get him a new Civic. Even an Si would be better suited for College than an S. The car has more room and probably less chance of theft/vandalism.

Get the S2000 he will be fine. Looks like we have plenty of people who goes to college and have a S2000. I am also a college student. If he wants to put lots of stuff or carry more passenger then get the si if not stick with the S.

One of the most expensive things for this car is the insurance. Someone around the age of 17-18 driving this car is considered "high risk." Depending on the year of the car, the insurance payment could almost be the same amount as the car per month. If you are paying for this car consider that the monthly payment could be between 300-450 and the insurance could be around 250-350. YOu are looking at a price range(car+ins) per month of 550-800.
Also what about other things like oil changes and tires. Are you prepared to spend 400-500 a year on new tires (and thats a low end tire)? They wear down quite quickly. These are all things to consider and I am sure I am missing something. Good luck on your choice.
