The BMW Z8 has a similar front, mid-engine layout as the S2k.

I heard that the Dodge Viper's are Front Mid-engine, the handling benifits are excellent because of the lower Center of Gravity.

Has there ever been another car made with and engine config like the S2000?

This is maybe why there are some who say it is a Mid Engine and some who think only the traditional *Rear* mounted can qualify as a Mid Engine.
612 Scaglietti is configured the same way. Testers have even mentioned it's a mid engine car.

Look at it this way

The mass of the driver and the mass of the engine both reside between the front and rear shock towers. Does it matter which sits in front of the other? The same thing is accomplished either way.

How about the Shelby Cobra?

It's not about where the engine is, it's about where the weight is.

50/50 weight distribution is the optimum that all designers try and achieve. Honda managed this with the original S2000.
They've then had to compromise this over the years for us mere mortals. 50/50 is perfect for tracks, but not necessarily for average drivers on very average roads.
Hence 04/05 will understeer more, not by changing the weight distribution, but by changing the characteristics of the suspension and tyres.

Just my 2p's worth (don't have a cents sign on my keyboard )

There is no need to further this debate. The S2000 is a mid-engined car by definition. There are such things as FRONT and REAR mid engine cars. They differ in that the engine is located either fore or aft of the driver while still being between the axles. How do you think we are able to achieve perfect 50/50 weight distribution?

There is no need for a poll, look at the facts everywhere on the S
it is a front mid engine car (engine behind front axle), just like there is rear mid engine cars.....and yes like many have said it is to achieve the 50/50 weight split.....PERIOD.
