S2000 timing chain slap on cold starts?
I’ve had issue after issue with my 2003 s2k. Past few days starting the car after being back from the shop it makes a rattling knocking some type of noise in the motor for a second as soon as the motor fires. I’m thinking it’s a stretched timing chain? I replaced the tct with an Oem one less than 100 miles ago. It only does it on cold start and doesn’t do it everytime or doesn’t do it as bad everytime sometimes it sounds really bad. Please help I literally just got the car back from the shop after spending $4,000 on the car and I’m already having another issue that started happening literally the second I got it back from the shop.
I’ve started having this problem of when cold starting my s2k it makes a noise from the engine. Sounds like timing chain slapping. Need some opinions it doesn’t do it everytime and sometimes it’s way louder than others and I think it’s only on cold starts. Tct was already replaced less than 100 miles ago with a new Oem one. Noise happens for like 1-2 seconds as soon as the motor fires. Please help.
Sounds like a bad drainback valve on oil filter. Lets all the oil drain out of passages, so on startup, oil pump takes a couple seconds to reprime everything.
The noise would be tct not having any oil pressure yet.
Fix is new oil filter. If due for an oil change, just do that.
Use the Honda filter that has instructions on the side about how to torque it down, numbers 1, 2 ,3...8 at the base, and FOLLOW THOSE INSTRUCTIONS. Don't treat it asany other filter and hand tighten. Must use a tool and fully tighten.
Not doing that or using a normal, non Honda filter, or the generic Honda filter risks filter spinning loose, loss of engine, possible engine fire and loss of car.

I occasionally have that noise, especially in cold weather. I have been reluctant to fix it ( clean and lubricate the starter gears) but it goes away months in the summer and so I procrastinate.
what did the shop do that you spent $4K for?
Have you asked them about your issue?
It may help to post a video of your issue for us to offer anything meaningful

Yeah post a vid of it. Are you certain it is not the common starter grind upon start? Very common on these cars. It sounds different than timing chain noise but does do it right after the engine starts for less than a second and typically when cold. And, if not super familiar with the sound a timing chain makes I can see thinking it is coming from that. If it is that it is nothing to worry about at all and you can fix it, but is not an emergency that you need to deal with immediately. If you can post a vid we can rule that out or in pretty quickly
yes he says he thinks is tct related. I had begot the head rebuilt and machined with new valves, retainers, guides etc. rod bearings were also replaced. Along with every gasket on the motor.
