I'll probably get flamed for suggesting this, but, after a warning, here goes.

Warning: On my 05, the plastic trim ring around the boot is held in with easy-pull clips on the front and sides, but it's attached with break-only tabs at the rear. It's a bitch to get back on right as well. Taking only the boot off will give you more than you bargained for -- that's why people are suggesting removing the whole console, which is what's in the shop manual.

Anyway, I'm keeping my shift boot snug up against my (OEM) knob with a couple of layers of double-stick foam tape. As far as I can tell (and I had the boot off, as implied by the above), there's no wire inside it. Instead, it's hour-glass-shaped, with the fold at the waist.

Clean off the shifter with alcohol, put a layer of tape below the nut, then another overlapping it and the nut. I think I added a third layer on top of these. Then, pull the boot up as high as you can and squeeze it snug onto the tape. All this is adjustable (before the fact), of course, if you don't want a "turtle-neck" look. HPH
