T1R coilovers and preload

Just received my T1R coilovers today and will be installing Sunday. I'm going by the DIY, but didn't really understand the preload. Do you set the pre load by tightening down the bolt on the top of the shock (where the adjustment knob is)? And if so, how much should I tighten it down on the T1R coilovers?
Also, I'm just trying to lower ~1.25 inches, do you guys have any tips on how to determine a starting point so I'm not taking them on/off adjusting height all day
Thanks.

post your question in under the hood.

If that's where this belongs, could a mod please move it there?

When the springs at no pre-load, measure it from lower springs perche to lower perche 125mm and 25mm at the rear, your car will have about 1.5 finger gap front and rear.

So are you saying they need to be preloaded?

I think I figured out a good way to start so I won't be adjusting all night (not sure, I guess I'll see tonight :p ), just need to know how much, if any, to set the preload.

Just wanting to make sure...I know you can adjust height by lossening the bottom collar and screwing the fork up (towards the spring), but is this the same as loosening the collar and threading the whole shock down?
That probably didn't make sense, so let me explain:

The two collars on the top (left) hold the spring in place, so adjusting them affects preload. But what if, when the coilovers are attached to the car, I loosen the bottom collar (far right) and thread the whole shock down by grabbbing the preload collar and turning it (not turning the collar independent of shock, but turning the collar and having the whole shock turn with it, thus threadding itself down onto the fork). This is just a lot easier than having to detatch the control arm and everything to change height, so I was wondering if it is the right way to do it, as I've read people only adjusting height by spinning the bottom collar.
Sorry for the long post :p and thanks for any help.
