I think engines from the mid 90s to 05 are the real stars.
F20C/22
2.7T
1.8T
4g63
Ej257
Ej205
N52( I think that's what they're called e46 3 series)
E36 engine, forgot the name

Today's engines, seem to have tons of issues with carbon build up(n54, 4.2fsi, 2.0T) and have to have continuous maintenance lol.

The only way to get your money's worth out of a vehicle is to drive it for a long time. My '95 Accord has 400+K mi. on it and it runs great. I bought it new and used synthetic oil every change, about every 4K miles. Cars are not a good investment, but what would life be like without them?

i think most people replace their cars because they are scared of repairs- they've been brainwashed to think that repairs are expensive- sure they are if you have to pay someone. Those are the same people who really don't understand cars and that its just a bunch of nuts and bolts. really, its not rocket science and if you do all your own maintenance/repairs, its not expensive.

my 2000 civic SiR is bought and paid for, and my annual repairs come nowhere close to a monthly payment. hell, i could replace my motor every year for less than monthly payments.

I think many are still stuck in the idea that cars fall apart after a certain age/mileage.

My grandmother worked in car sales for many years (sales and managed a small Chevy dealer until into the early 90's). She fully believed that cars weren't reliable past 50k miles (keep in mind the type of cars and the time period she worked in).

I also think many buyers use reliability as the excuse to condone spending a massive percentage of their income on a status symbol.

I have been reading about the new CTR engine and I keep thinking how great that engine would work in a S2000.
If Honda freshened up the front/rear lights and bumpers a bit as well as spent some time on the interior the S2000 would sell.

Also under carriage aero, but after all that it'd a little more expensive. I'm thinking $45,000

Engines don't last as long as they did when my dad was a teen.
I feel the opposite. When I was a teen, the typical engine was worn out by 100K miles. Leaking oil every wear. Power was way down. Not to mention yearly tuneups that required new plugs, new points (that required some skill to adjust), distributor adjustments, carb adjustments, etc. Coolant changes every two years. New exhaust every 2-4 years. Now you change the oil occasionally, plugs and coolant once at 100K miles and easily get 200K out a modern engine. I sold a Toyota Solara with 165K miles on it that never had the plugs changed...it ran like it did when it was new, including getting the same gas mileage.
My dad's first car was a 54 bel air. He got it from my grandpa with a blown motor. A few weeks later, the engine is in pieces in his room and after that, it's in the car running. Dad really has a skill when it comes to carbureted engines though... I think he was 17 at the time when he got the car though.

Your experience may say otherwise, but modern engines will outlast the hell out of any vehicles pre 80 (especially American), Jap has always been a bit ahead of the curve in my opinion.

Agreed.... I'm done with car payments till at least 2020. I'll drop motors and trans and repaint exteriors first.

I find simple cars refreshing. Getting in and not having to hold down a button for three seconds to get it to do anything, complicated computers, or voice activated doohickeys. Something to be said about simple vehicles. I have in my stable what equates to having a four wheeler and a go cart. My S2K and a Cherokee XJ. S has 59k miles, Jeep has 266K. Both are easy to work on.

There is also something to be said about, heated/cooled seat, heated steering wheel, remote start, a backup camera, automatic parking, phone integration, and a good Nav system.
