Throttle Cable Slack

This might need to be in "Under the Hood" but I thought since this was such a popular adjustment it might need to go here.

When checking my throttle cable slack I noticed it had quite a bit of play in it, but when I checked the pedal WOT would be probably a little more than 1/4" off the floor. There is a rubber bushing that gives on the pedal side of the cable so you can push it to the floor without putting undue stress on the cable. I decided not to adjust the slack as I don't think it would be a good idea to have the cable so tight when your pushing it to the floor. When doing so your stressing the cable and everything its attached to. Also when you put your foot on the pedal the slack falls right out of it. The only way I would consider adjusting the slack out of the cable is raising the pedal stop with it.

From this photo it looks to have about .5" slack in the cable.

I tightened mine up as much as I could. Instant response. It's a personal preference thing though.

I'm not saying not to do it, just check the pedal.

That is an insane amount of slack.

:iagree:

Isn't about half what I have recommended on here? I have all of whats recommended in the helms manual (according to another post). I don't really know a good way to adjust it without it being ridiculously tight when floored (after all thats what its about) :).

I'd rather have NO slack for instant throttle response and then NOT slam the pedal all the way to the floor.

I never "jam the pedal to the metal." That's for automatic tranny drivers. There's no point to feeding more gas than the car can take anyway... I usually modulate the throttle.

take the slack off

You don't go to WOT at all?

Its supposed to be like 1/4" or so slack. Take most of the play out and you'll find it easier to modulate the throttle at step in, plus response is better and the engine supposedly opens up more.
