I pulled this off the ICCH board and thought we could all learn from it. Here is the post verbatim:
I have nothing to add.

okay guys this is really sad, but u guys need to read this... it happened
today (3/12/01) about 6:30....
I know we all are automotive entusiasts. and there is nothing wrong with
that. Some of us like the Show Circuit, some like the Race Circuit, and some
of us like to do stupid things like race on the streets.
My problem is with the last group. I'm not trying to be hypocritical, because
I've done some stupid **** in the past too, but, like most of us do, I
matured.
About 50 minutes ago, I was outside of my neighbor hood smoking a cigarette,
and a '92-'95 Civic Si and a '98 Prelude come racing down the two-lane
residential street at what the Cop says was about 130 mph. Mind you, the
speed limit is 25. The Civic hit a dip in the road and lost control. He slid
sideways, and flipped 4 times on to the sidewalk, where my neighbor was
taking a walk with his 5 year old son. The car slammed into them, killing
them both upon impact. The paramedic told me that the driver of the Civic was
also killed when he flipped over. He was not wearing his seatbelt. The
Prelude driver fled the scene, and was found about 15 minutes ago, and the
police officer brought him by the scene and made him walk over to the car,
and see for his own eyes the tragedy he had partly caused. He was arrested on
3 counts of vehicular manslaughter, hit and run, and evading the police.
Please guys and girls, for god's sake, keep it off of the street. Two
innocent people are dead. That little boy will never know the Joy of Life,
and now will never know the sport that took his young life.
Please take it to the Track.

In the eyes of the law, driving at 130 mph in a residential neighborhood evidences an "abandoned and malignant heart." It speaks to a criminal disregard of the safety of others. The question is not whether do or did really stupid things when young, but how stupid. Racing in a residential neighborhood, well that's beyond stupid, it's criminal. 3 dead, one a child, one on his way to prison.
Rest in peace.

There is no need for this to ever happen. I read a similar story at Club Si a while ago, and it's sadder every time I hear it.
Please, guys, know your limitations and keep it out of residential and populated areas. The Austin crew here does some high speed runs on occasion, and I think this proves the point I've tried to make that we need to keep it unquestionably under control in traffic and in populated areas and save the crazy stuff for the back roads.

What a needless, tragic story.
I wish driver's education students were still forced to watch the Highway Safety Films "Mechanized Death," "Signal 30," "Wheels of Tragedy," and "Highways of Agony" before they were issued driver's licenses. Unfortuately, some misguided parent groups thought these films were too intense and had them removed from driver's ed curricula back in the late 1970s.
Perhaps when these young drivers saw real graphic road carnage, they would be shocked into thinking of the consequences of their actions first before committing such irresponsible and lethal acts.

I agree S2000 driver! A tour of the emergency room of most hospitals on a Friday or Saturday night would also help impress on the consciousness of younger drivers the seriousness of the physics of the interaction between steel and glass, on the one hand, and that frail envelope of flesh and bone, on the other.
