Default Water in the trunk

I realized the other day when I had a flat tire that I am collecting water in the space beneath the tool kit. I had a good inch of water there! Any ideas how I am getting water in there?

PS: I recently had the top replaced? Any potential connection there?

Thanks in advance!

Just to help us rule some other things out...Do you have a spoiler or wing on your car?

Hye-
I have the EXACT same problem in my S. I have no spoiler, so that is not the problem. I think the culprit is a TINY hole in the fiberglass tub that forms the tool well. Maybe a little rock chip or something. For now, I have just punched a hole in the bottom of both of the indentions to allow the water to drain.

I only do this because there no tools in the well anymore, but rather a 10" sub enclosure. Nothing to really get damaged by a bit of water. You may want to make a trip to Home Depot and get some Kool Seal. Its a latex based sealent that is used for waterproofing basements and foundations. Should keep the water out great.

Since I have never replaced my top, I cannot comment on what may be wrong with yours. I'll check my tech manual for you tonight...perhaps there is a troubleshooting section for top replacement.

Anyway...my guess is that you may have a problem with your spoiler. I would think that if you are getting leakage from your top, you would notice it around or near where your spare tire is. Did you remove your spare and the carpet covering this area? If so, was it wet/dry??? If that area seems dry, the problem may be where the spoiler is bolted to the trunk.

When the spoiler is installed, the hardware that comes with it includes 4 little sticky doughnut "things". These are installed where the bolts secure your spoiler to the trunk. They help keep water from running under the spoiler and entering your trunk. If someone forget to add these during installation (very easy to overlook) you will find water in your tool area! Please check inside your trunk where the bolts secure your spoiler. Do you notice any rust stains...any moisture around the rubber stops?

Let me know what you find out!

P.S.-Do not try and remove you spoiler to check for the sticky doughnuts. Besides the bolts, your spoiler is secured with double sided tape. If this is the source of your problem, I would take it back to the dealer. If you try and remove it, you will ruin the sticky doughnuts and your spoiler may not reseal. I'd let the dealer fool with it!

did you buy the car used? if so, it could have been hit in the rear and not properly fixed.. it would be leaking in from the taillights or the rear panel

"TINY HOLE"??? Do you have any pictures of what you are referring to? I have no idea where this would be.

Also, what area are you recommending to be sealed?

I do not have any pics, but if you get down and look up under the rear bumper, there is a fiberglass tub there that the tool tray sits in. I think mine may have been hit by a rock or something and just chipped a bit (my parents have a gravel driveway). I think the hole is so tiny that you cant even see it (probably pin sized). But that is still more than enough for water to infiltrate. I was suggesting sealing the fiberglass tub.... all of it. The Kool Seal is like a white waterproof paint.

I have a feeling that his problem is the same as mine. It cannot be the spoiler, as I dont have one. Also, in my case, there is no water ANYWHERE else in the trunk, other than underneath the styrofoam tool holder. I spent an entire afternoon looking for the hole somewhere (had to be in the bottom 1/2 of the fiberglass tub, as nothing above the tool kit in the well was even moist). Once I could not find it, I just got a 1/8" drill bit and punched a hole in each of the 2 indentions in the bottom of the well. All the water just flowed right out. At this point, I am not concerned about a bit of water getting in there, as long as it does not stay in there. That is when moisture / mold / mildew problems set in.
