Weight Reduction
Rather than add FI to my cars and stress the engine/transmission etc. I prefer to reduce the car's weight to improve the performance. In the S, besides removing the spare tire/jack/tools etc. what else can be removed to make it lighter without removing the A/C (TX heat) and the radio?
Anyone know the weight of the spare tire and jack etc.? What is the weight of the motor for the power top? TIA;) |
Ask krazik about this, his car is completely stripped and is naked.

i dont think weight reduction is gonna do much compared to FI
super street did a test on how much u gain from weight reduction the results? its not as much as u think it is |
1 lb = .0021 in 1/4 mile (nice baseline computation which is about right with cars of this power to weight ratio).
IOW, remove 100-lbs and you should see a drop of .2 seconds in your 1320. That's two car lengths (more or less) at these trap speeds. The spare tire, jack and tool kit is around 30-lbs. Tires/wheels is the first place I'd start if you're serious about losing weight. The battery weight can be shaved (see s2ki.com marketplace), you can replace the seats with 12-lb racing seats, etc. A titanium dual can drop another 35-40-lbs off the OEM system (52-lbs) or for even bigger weight gains, go with a single Ti exhaust. I replaced my mirrors (fairly heavy...about 5-lbs each) and steering wheel (that air bag assembly is heavy) with a carbon fiber D-wheel. Changing the OEM air box with an AEM, INJEN, etc. can save a few more lbs as well. Then again, you're talking $2-3K if you add all this up (wheels/tires, cf mirrors, cf steering wheel, intake, exhaust, etc). |
intake/exhaust/header.....saves a lot of weight

Russ, what wheels do you have on your car??? Are those Rota Slip Streams?
|
Yup, 16x7 ET45 w/ 205/50/16 and 225/45/16 Toyo Proxes T1-S (total tire/wheel weight about 33-lbs per corner). Tires are .8 inches shorter than OEM, the car has been lowered with a Tanabe NF kit (1.25-inches). Here's an older pic

-1 PRM Intake
-25 Spare Tire -2 Trunk Trim -7 Tools/Jack -1 Mats/Visors -30 (1/2 tank of gas) -12 Optima Battery(see S2ki Store--easiest and cheapest way to drop a lot of weight -15 Recaro SPG/Taitec rails -5 Center Console -10 Stock Rollhoops/Plastic (only take off of course if you go with aftermarket rollbar) -2 Washer Fluid This put me at 2734 with a ~60lb Bitterbar and Digrappa XBrace Then I went with: -1 Alum Pulleys -30 Wilwood Brakes -5? Interior Carpet -15 Sparco + Taitec A lightweight exhaust can drop another 20-30lbs easy. But with no carpet/sound deadening material it's wayyyy too loud. |
Wow, thanks for all the input guys. Much appreciated.
