What "number" is my car?

Someone recently posted that for 02 about 9000 s2000's were sold in US.

The actual number of '02 S2000s sold in the US is 9,684. An increase of 2 cars over the 9,682 they sold in '01.

There were more than 9,684 sold in the states. My '02 S2000 is number 10028. I just bought it in December.

Hmm. That 9684 figure is from Honda. Looks like even they don't know how many were sold

After pondering about it more, it still seems reasonable that Honda sold 9684 cars in America even though my car is number #10028, considering that the VIN calculation is based on production and not sales.
