I don't believe that a short air intake is as good as a cold air. The temperature in the engine bay is noticeably hotter than where the CAI is. Also, I think the CAI is perfectly safe as long as you do the research and take the proper precautions like covering the drain hole under the passenger side of the hood and for extra protection put the "umbrella" over the filter. I used a metal heat shield as an umbrella, but I',ve seen others use plastic bottles to cover the top of the filter. Other than that the only problem I could see was if you drove through a 2 foot puddle, which why would you do anyway?
a cold air intake is mostly for an extra few ponies on the dyno, where the bay IS hotter.
