When Honda certifies a used car
 

Do we have a list of the things they check somewhere on the site? All the info that came with my car talks about them checking 150 different items before saying, yeah, we'll give this oen the extended warranty. would love to know what they did.

Think of it as a major maintenance. Replace air filter, differential, brake fluid, etc.

You could ask them for the invoice of the work done, if it's certified.

There is a complete list of the inspection process available on honda's website I believe. I have not checked for it, but I know for certain there is a list on the Acura website, and I imagine they are quite if not exactly similar.

Basically they check for all sorts of noises, vibrations, proper shifting, alined body panels, abnormal wear, etc etc.. as well as major maintenance that was listed above.

Some dealerships just slap on a cert badge and bang you over the head for some extra $$$

Don't be so naive as to think that all Honda dealers will do all of the required inspection or maintenance. Their "certification" is more likely a third party insurance policy (I'm guessing here) and the less time and money they spend on it before they put it out onto the used car lot, the bigger their profit margin.
I've heard "stories (so take it with a grain of salt), that a trade in that checks out before the used car manager OKs it, can get sold within hours after the being left by the previous owner. The new owner is told it's "certified".

With the CPO all you are really paying for is the warranty extension.

Nope, Dealerships pay for a car to be certified. Honda charges the dealership when the vehicle is marked sold. Over here the vehicle is inspected to the program's guidelines, and all the CPO history is logged in Honda's Network. Plus we go above and beyond and replace common wear components (oil, brakes, brake pads, tires, etc.) So you may think you get bonked over the head for a CPO car, but you have no Idea how much it costs to get one on the lot. Depending on the vechicle just the Honda CPO warranty can cost the DEALER more than $1000, that's one pricey sticker. You're not just getting the warranty extension, when you purchsed a pre '06 Honda did it come with a powertrain warranty? NOPE. you get a 7/100K with the CPO. I know of a few 2005 CPO S2000's rolling around DFW with a 4/48K Bumper to Bumper + 7/100K Powertrain warranty. You would have had to pay extra for a HondaCare to get half of that.
