Whine when going backwards (reverse)

The past couple days I've been hearing this whining sound from the back of the car. It only happens when I'm going backwards... it happens in reverse and after i pop it back into neutral. It's a constant sound while the car is moving and stops when the car is stopped or moving forward. It doesn't happen in any other gears. Any input on what's going on?

It's your rear differential. I heard it too, only in Reverse but it's not that noticable. Have you flushed the diff fluid recently? I do mine every 10K miles!

All manual transmission cars have a whine/hum sound when in reverse, it has to do with the fact that Reverse gear is a straight gear, not helical like the forward gears. I think the frequency of this "whine" sound transfers through the driveshaft to the differential and rear axel which makes it more apparent. It's not as noticable on my FWD Prelude.

They all do that sir.

well, this is a sound that i've never heard before... so it's probably different than the usually whine. i'm gonna flush the differential fluid and see if that's the problem.

they all whine when in gear.. don't know if my S whines while out of gear .. I've never coasted in reverse :)

i wasn't coasting at like 20mph in reverse lol

when i'm backing out of my driveway, i put it in reverse and get to about 2/3mph then pop it in neutral and coast off the driveway until im ready to go forward, into 1st. during this whole time of going backwards, i can hear the whine.

I don't notice it when I am in neutral.

That's because the reverse gear isn't engaged in neutral.

I thought this thread was a joke by 2HEATY or something

Sometimes when just being in gear with the clutch all the way in and rolling, you'll hear a slight whine from the gears.
