Default Who goes to dealers for services?

Do people on this board change their engine oil themselves?
How about the major services?
I am about to bring my car in for a 30k mile service and they are asking $530 for it. Is it worth it?
My warranty runs out in 500 miles as I am at 35.5k miles..
If they find something wrong, they will fix it under warranty right?

I do what I can myself and pay an independant shop $100-$200 to do the rest.

The operative word is "if". They'll do the required maintenance stuff, but unless you specify that you are paying them to do a complete inspection to find things that might be wrong, they probably won't be looking all that hard.

The 30K service doesn't include anything you can't take care of yourself with the right tools and patience. I'd recommend reading the write up on how to change the cabin air filter so you dont rip the hood seal. Do it yourself, and save some cash for the things that matter. Your best investment would be to purschase the HELM manual. It cost about the same as paying for 1 hour of dealer labor!

The 30k mi checkup is costs less than $100 in parts and even if you have NO tools right now, you could buy the tools you need for WAY less than $430. Someone in your area will be glad to help, I'm sure.

Someone on here has a quote in his sig that says it's better learning how to do it yourself, than paying someone to do it for you. I agree with this 100%

Dude...since you don't pick up your phone, the dealer at concord quote me 379 for 30k service. Didn't I give you the checklist with price quote from dealer last night?

And I have the helm's manual, why don't you just listen!!!! god damnit!!! LOL

I bought my 2001 S2000 used with 24,400 miles on the odometer. I brought all services (plus some) up to date myself including oil and filter change, differential fluid change, transmission fluid change, brake fluid change, all inspections in the manual, etc., for about $65.00 including lift fees. These services would probably have cost over $750.00 at a dealership. At a dealership, I suspect any inspections or services not directly observable by the customer would not be done, regardless of the price charged or statements of such by the service manager. By doing these services myself I know what has, or has not, been done to my vehicle and have some sense of the quality of my own work. Forgive my pessimism, but my experience with dealer services, warranty or otherwise, have generally not been good ones. Search this forum for instances of oil drain plugs not tightened, alignments botched, cars damaged at dealerships, plus all the evasion that goes on when things go badly.

"Lift fees"??? Where do you rent a lift? (If that's what you mean).

You can do your 30K on your back in your drive way with a jack and a couple of jack stands. You just need to buy the fluids, and tools if you do not have them. A little patience never hurts. At less than 100 dollars. If not, find someone in your area that is willing to help you with it. The s2k community is good and someone in your area, i'm sure, will be willing to help. I'm a mechanic, so it only took me about a 45 minutes to do trans, diff, and brake fluid changes. Just my $.02
