15K Analysis of Redline 75W90 Diff Oil
As I mentioned nearly a month ago, I planned on doing an oil analysis of Redline's offerings after 15K of use in both the tranny and the diff. Well, I screwed up the tranny sample, but I did get the diff done. So after a long wait and a fight with the post office, here it is.
Note I reported the mileage on the oil as 15,000 miles. It actually may be a bit less - 13K or 14K. Honda recommends refilling every 30K IIRC, so the Redline should do well, after all it is a synthetic. I would think that redline is superior to mobile 1, and maybe change it at 7.5k? however time will tell. as I was about change out mine with redline. thanks for the post :D

Thanks rworne. The UOA I had done with LE-607 was also high on nickel after an 8K interval, but all other wear indicators were below or within norms. I hope other members will follow suit and test their gear lube, so that we may have more comparisons instead of manufacturer's claims.

Well, the drain and fill interval is supposed to be 2 years or 30,000 miles. Honda doesn't even spec a synthetic for the diff, just "Hypoid Gear Oil API Classification GL5 or GL6 Viscosity: SAE90"
I would assume Redline's stuff would hold up as well as Honda's recommendations. Still, there is a probability the 7-8K miles on the diff were not enough to get rid of all the break-in metal wear. Either that, of the original fluid was so cruddy the residue messed up the new oil. |

I notice several problems here.....and yes I too can relate to sending out the "little black bottle" with the post office. You should contact the owner who is a really nice guy as I helped set up the S2000 database many moons ago with Blackstone. In particular look at what is listed under the "Make" and "Model" database entries. Blackstone is best used for trending and you have only provided one datapoint for you car. To compare it to other cars of the same make and model you need to correct your samples database entry:

Since I only have a single point (as you said) the proof will be if the numbers of metals go down on the next diff change. EDIT EDIT: I was told that the info on my form is correct and they only have one Honda differential in their database. Changing it to what was listed above would have me compare the diff oil to motor oil. As a suggestion, they said if you have a lab # to supply they can check if something's been missed. |

I'll send out my LE607 for UOA once I hit 15k. I just mailed some Amsoil motor oil to them today.
