Thumbs up 1st, 3rd, 5th gear popping out!

I have big problem with my 03 S2k.

Recently my 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear (top gears) have been popping out of gear once I take my hand off the shifter!
It isn’t so bad when the car is warmed up but when it is cold it pops out immediately.

I have an Axial Flow short shifter; I installed it about 3 years ago and haven’t had 1 problem with it.

I never tracked my car or pushed it really hard.
I think it is very weird that it is only popping out of those 3 top gears and not 2nd, 4th, and 6th.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thank you for your time, Alex A

Afaik there are balls and springs that hold the shifter in gear, maybe with a rod for each gear, and maybe they aren't holding the shifter any more? Maybe the synchros are shot from years with a short shifter? Does the shifter pop out on acceleration, coasting, or both?

there is a nylon ball on the bottom of the shifter that broke and this happened to me but it was 2 4 and 6 so i am guessing that could have happened to you. just pull the knob off and the little cover and look down there with a flashlight you should see a piece of the ball. there only like 2 bucks new from honda.

Sorry to hijack but I'm at this point in a teardown and am wondering how do you remove the shifter boot?

The manual shows the round plastic piece apparently just lifting right off, it won't and I'm afraid to try more force since I dont' want to break it.

The OP will need this info as well.

I used a thin screw driver. If you look at the plastic ring I think there are arrows in the plastic pointing to where the tabs that hold it are. Look where the rubber boot and ring meet while pulling up gently on the boot you will see small slits in the rubber. Slide the screw driver through the slot and gently pry, I think inward it's been a while since I did this, while lifting the rubber boot upward. Your trying to release the clip. Lifting the boot dislodges the clip. Once a clip dislodges and lifts slightly repeat around the ring . There should be 4 clips. Good luck be gentle.

Look at the nylon cup on the tip of the gear lever ( where it goes into the gearbox). If this cup collapses you can only put it half way into gear and it pops out again.

Get it fixed as each time it pops out under acceleration its chipping the end of the dog teeth on your sliders/gears away.
