I one thing I learned from doing maintenance is always have the dealer do it if your car is still under warranty!
Alot of dealers will look at the maintenance history when dealing with warranty issues! If some things are not done according to plan, then dealers will have a case against you!
I know this sucks, but I like to play it safe so there will be no questions asked! At least until the warranty is over!
Oh, and the 7500 mi tune-up only consists of an oil change and some inspections....resulting in ~$77. I'm getting mine done this Saturday!

change the oil, that's what the manual says.
I have also heard the valves should be checked and possibly adjusted. Is this useful or just a way for someone to make money off us non-mechanical rubes?

you dont need to check the vavle or anything like that.
all you need to do is to change the oil and check the tire inflation and condition. that is for normal condition.
and for severe conditions,
oil and filter change
inspect front and back brakes
inspect tie-rod ends, steering gearbox and rack boots
check steering linkage for looseness
check electrical components for damage
inspect suspension components
check bolts for tightness
check ball joints boots for deterioration and damge
inspect driveshaft boots for crack, and check boot bands for tightness.
there you go, i hope this helps.
this is from the dealer they give you for maintenance
