Unhappy AP1 Radiator fan not working but the car isn't overheating

Hey Guys,

SO i recently swapped out a motor, on my 2000 AP1 to a 2003 AP1 motor. Everything seems to be working correctly but the radiator fan.

The fan does not turn on after 20-30 mins and the gauge on the cluster reads normal temp. (3 Bars) (Also drove the car for 20 miles still with 3 bars as the temp reading and no smoke of any kind coming from the motor)
  1. Car doesn't have heater
  2. When switch it to AC to turn on the fan it doesn't either.
There is only one thing I haven't done is that the AC compressor was only installed and has not been recharged. (But that doesn't really effect the fan.)

Has anyone had this issue? I don't want to be stuck in traffic and having this puppy blow a radiator hose or something .

Thanks!

Is it possible that during the swap you didn't get the cooling system fully bled? Maybe the temp sensor for the fan is in open air and not coolant.

I probably didn't fully bleed the system, i will try bleeding the system tonight and see if that makes a difference.

Also it's not the thermostat so i'll give this a go to see what the issue is..

If you jump the fan connector terminals straight to the battery, does either fan run?

Check fuses 57 and 58 under hood and 20 under dash.

that'll start the troubleshooting process...

I know that the fan was working prior to this engine swap, so i was assuming that the fans are working because i didn't remove it but I'll check the fuses and start bleeding it after.

Thanks!

I bled the coolant and got heater, both top and bottom hoses are hot but still no fan still not over heating. Had the car running in the garage for about 20mins. Still nothing.

Tried turning the AC on to trigger the fan but nothing..

Now the top part of the radiator is steaming..Conclusion: Bad radiator and fan?

Did you try running the fan off the battery? It could just be a bad thermal switch. I would pressure test the radiator before proceeding. If you make sure the radiator is leaking, find a used one is your cheapest option but also most risky. Koyo makes a very nice all aluminum radiator and is roughly the same price as new OEM. have you checked the fuses for the fan motor?

I believe you can check the fan(s) by disconnecting the sensor on the bottom of the radiator and shorting the two contacts. The AC switch should run them regardless. Loose or broken wires? I don't have the schematic handy but recall either switch would activate the fans and two switch failures is unlikely.

Thanks guys! I will have a buddy of mine come by later today to test out all the sensors. All fuses are good as well, but i might as well look into a new Radiator just in case (it's a 10 year old radiator :P ). Will update once i find the issue.

After testing everything.
  1. Thermostat: Good
  2. Fuses: Good
  3. Jumped both fans they all work.
  4. Receiving power to both fan outlets
  5. Replaced: Radiator Fan Switch{Sensor at the bottom of the radiator}. (Used a heat gun to heat up the switch and the fan came on with both old sensor and new sensor)
    1. After seeing the fan comes on (#5) I installed the switch, flushed the coolant and replaced it. I then started the car and let idle again for 20 mins but the fan does not come on and I do have heat.
    2. Went for a drive, after an hr. stuck in traffic the car starts becoming sluggish.
    3. Temp gauge still 3 bars (BUT this can range from 165 to 265 degrees)
Now I'm totally LOST. LOL In a perfect world this not over heating would be ideal!..LOL Possibly an Electrical issue? coolant working like charm!? If anyone can shoot out ideas, it would be great! Thank you again in advance!

*Note: it does take a while for the car to warm up, prior to this motor i can reach the temp gauge on the cluster to 3 bars after having it idle for maybe 10 mins. Now I drive it for about 5 mins its still at 2 bars and then goes up to 3 bars*
