the second video you posted that was fixed by valve adjustment does not sound the same as yours, in my opinion. good luck.

I agree, doesn't sound the same at all.

The OP's video sounds like a scored cylinder wall. But a more mild version of when my 4th cylinder overheated and went out of round and caused piston slap (I only had 21K on the motor!):

Ran the compression, and the numbers are shockingly good in my opinion. Got the starter replaced and the engine(relatively) warmed and this is what I got:

Cyl 1: 212/215
Cyl 2: 210/213
Cyl 3: 212/215
Cyl 4: 210/212

That is good news, a scored cylinder will typically show higher compression in one cylinder.

Check the valve clearances.

Do not go to dealer! They will overcharge you, and chances are they will mess things up. They just don't see these cars enough, and don't know how to work on them.

Especially valve adjustment. There are no other modern Hondas that have adjustable valves. Chances are this will be the very first valave adjustment that tech will ever have done, and chances are he was never trained to work on S.

If you can't find a local mechanic with S experience, for thos service, valve adjustment, thete is a very experienced group of techs near you that have done this identical service many times before, albeit on different size motors. They are called motorcycle mechanics. The valve adjustment on our cars is identical procedure to many bikes, especially sport bikes. Try to fimd a local motorcycle mechanic that worjs on sportbikes. He's probably hungry for work this time of year anyway.

why would a scored cylinder have higher compression?

Took it to a local Honda dealer today, they listened to it and were too scared to even pop the hood and get into it. Said drop a new engine in... I now have the car at a very reputable classic/exotic car repair shop sitting overnight so they have a cold engine to work on the valves with. Hopefully I get somewhere.. will keep everyone in the loop.

Broken retainers show 0 symptoms. Yet another clueless lying shop that only cares about selling. Do some real diagnostics for a change instead of random guesswork that is 100% mechanically impossible.

I have yet to see a single "built" engine outlast an all OEM S2000 engine.
I agree with Billman

I was thinking it was cylinder related too, but compression came back very good with no deviation honestly at all on any of the cylinders. If adjusting the valves doesn't do any good I'm investing in a borescope before I start tearing into the engine.
