Default AP1 Tailshaft bearing carnage

Had a really loud "whirring" noise on my Ap1 at any speed so I ordered all 3 bearings for the tailshaft and pulled it from the car. I found all 3 bearings had damage, the inner one was really notchy and the rear had chunks missing from the rollers. Interestingly, the front one wasn't that bad (seems from some searching that's the most common one to fail?). Still need to press on the new bearings and reassemble the car. hopefully it'll be nice and quiet.

Anyone know why this would happen? previous owner ran low on trans fluid maybe? How can I prevent this from happening again, should I tilt the car and over fill the trans?

Over filling does nothing.

Proper shimming of that bearing is key.

Oh, I would have thought it was from lack of oil getting to the bearings.

Are you taking about those shims which were behind the races? if so where do I get the proper ones?

You may have had improper pre-load on those bearings. Here's a good DIY video.

Some of the early 00-01 trans had issues with the trans pump being faulty is my understanding. Not sure if this was still a potential issue on later years.

thanks for the vid, that has a lot of good info. I will have to check the preload on them.

Yeah, i did read about this. But the front bearing was pretty much fine so I dunno if that was the cause.

I did this last year for the same problem. The shims were all backordered and a pain to get so plan accordingly. I adjusted the preload according to spec but I don't know if its 100% accurate if you don't pull out the transmission (which I did not do) because you are turning other transmission components and not just testing the true "pre-load" out of the car like in the video above.

I ended up setting about the same running torque numbers as was on the car before I did the work. I figured I got 90k out of the bearings so hopefully it should last another 90!
