AP2 pops out of second gear
Hey guys I have an AP2. I notice that the 2nd gear pops out RARELY, so it is hard to replicate the problem. I took it to honda because it is still under warranty. The tech couldn't get it to pop out. So I said fine, he changed the transmission fluid and the car shifted smoothly.
I went autocrossing a couple of weeks ago and the car popped out of second gear twice. I noticed with the help of a friend of mine that it seems to happen under hard cornering (still not often enough). I called honda spoke to the tech to have him check it out again but he said if I can't replicate the problem then rightfully so he will not fix the synco if thats the problem.
Has anyone had this problem on an ap2? Any suggestions of what I can tell the tech when I go to drop off the car? I know I can't tell him I was autocrossing tho.
I know there is a problem because the car is already in gear and both of my hands are on the steering wheel and it just pops out on its own. I just dont want it to be a bigger problem later if i notice it now.
Thanks,
Dale

I don't know what Honda will do but I'd maintain a copy of your complaint if the car is still under warranty.
If the problem gets worse when your out of warranty, you have a valid argument for a fix or parts replacement.

This is a known issue, and it's usually not pilot error.
As a poster said above, there is a TSB. My dealer replaced the 1st and 2nd gear countershaft assembly and synchros under warranty. Mine was an '04 and had this issue before the TSB was published.

I had the same problem with my 04. It was a nightmare trying to get them to replicate the problem. I had to get a video.
BE F'N sure you take it to a dealer that has techs that are experienced with the s2000. If you don't they'll f up the rebuild and blah blah you'll be screwed.
I had to have my last s2000 tranny rebuilt 5 times because they f'ked up and forgot to put a clip in the shifter linkage or something causing the car to pop out of gear. They tried to blame me as abusing the car when it was their fault all along. Inexperienced dealers suck.

I've seen a guy's S2000 pop out of gear at 4,500 RPM while decel. You could try to replicate it by running 2nd gear to redline and let the RPM drop and see if it pops out. Let me find you that vid.
Edit:
Found it! Ironically, his is 2nd gear as well.

I hope you get it fixed under warranty. Good luck!

Popping out of gear is RARELY due to synchros...that is why that won't fix it...If the snchros are shot (and bad driving leads to worn 2nd gear syn) the shifter fork will bend...
When a shifter fork is bent, the shifter can pop out under hard decel and sometimes hard accel. It is intermittant for a long time.

Honda has acknowledge that for 2004 - mid 2005 model years, popping out of 2nd gear under deceleration can happen due to 2nd gear and 2nd gear synchos being out of tolerance.
It makes no mention of bent shift forks.
My car was repaired following the recommendations mentioned in TSB-05-009 and it took care of my popping out of 2nd gear issue.
