Break In Driving
What are the proper mileage limits to start running the car up to red line?
What mileage do you recommend for the 1st oil change? Should I run these oil changes through my dealer or use my local jiffy lube? |
In the case you would need to add oil, what oil should be used?
Since the owner's manual suggest you shouldn't change your oil until 6500 miles because the oil in the car contains additives to help with the break-in. |
Do a search, but the consensus was that the regular 10W-30 Mobil oil was the oil of choice for break in (costs ~$1.29/quart). The rumor is that the oil that Honda sells as Honda oil is re-packaged dino Mobil oil. Don't use the Mobil 1 synthetic oil (the stuff that costs $4.59/quart) for your first oil change. Mobil 1 is ynthetic and is too "slick" to allow for proper break-in. I also read that dino 10W-30 Castrol is a good choice because it has a relatively high molybednum content.
If you're interested, do a search for Blackstone, on one of those threads I posted the results of their analysis of my first oil change. PS: I recommend doing the first oil change as soon as possible after you reach 3750 miles. And use your choice of regular oil at that change. Wait till at least your second oil change and maybe your third before you switch over to synthetic oil (Mobil 1). I replaced the oil filter with a Mobil 1 MI-104 oil filter (costs ~$10.00). This was based on my evaluation of the many posts on this subject to the s2ki board, and my experience with Mobil products to date. |
