Caliper Lifting
Following the instructions in this forum I decided to check out the pads on my 05 with 42K miles. Got the car on the stands, loosened the lower caliper bolt and tried to swing the caliper up, but it would only move about 1/16 inch. Looking at it, there are some clips that seem to be attached to the pad or shims and they are hanging up. I didn't want to force anything so I put the bolt back in and waited to ask the question here. Could it be the shim and pad is stuck to the caliper? Could I have done it when I painted them a while back? The good news was looking at the pad with the wheel off there appears to be lots of material left.

Remove both caliper bolts and just clean the hardware.

Loosen the upper bolt a bit...that will help it swing more easily.

Actually I did loosen the top bolt, and removed it to see if I could lift the entire caliper. No dice. Put both bolts back in place.
Sounds like I should spray some brake cleaner on the components and maybe use some persuasion. |
did you compress the piston in? how much distance did you squeeze from there?

There is a spring clip, slide it out. There might be a bigger black clip that holds a fine, shiny metal spring on each pad. Some people use other honda pads and clips. Otherwise, the whole caliper swings upward easily with one bolt off.

Sometimes you have to give it a jiggle. Sometimes a rubber mallet helps, too.
