Default Camshaft position

How can you find out what exact position the cams need to be in w/o removing the head(assuming you installed them in what you thought was the same position you removed them from only to find out you have no compression)? Asking for a friend...

The cams are marked in and ex, that's step 1, then it's just a matter of aligning the marks, crank pulley and timing case, two notches on the camwheel level with the head and the marks on the camshaft gears facing each other.

Yeah, I already got to that point. Cams are in and the marks on the main gear and cam gears are lined up. But it's a tooth or 2 off.

What's a tooth or two off? You mean the white mark on the crank is a little off when the cam wheel and cam gears are aligned? Or that you can't align the cams? If the timing is so far off that it won't start maybe you need a new timing chain, or a way to advance the cam timing.

Intake and exhaust lobes should be pointing at 2 and 10 on cylinder 1 if you lined up everything correctly.
