Can an impact from a collision loosen an axle nut?

How would it loosen itself like that? Especially after nearly 400ft lbs used to tighten said nut? The collision shop claims to have not touched it. If it can happen through normal wear and tear I accept that.

No. There is virtually no torsional load that gets put into the nut from the driveline.

The driveline produces well over 2000LB-FT at the wheels. So...if the load was transferred into the nut:
-The axle stub would snap from tensile loading.
-The nut would stand no chance of staying tight.

Likely that someone loosened it and isn't admitting or remembering it.
