CEL

Hello everyone,

i am back and with a new issue, a much more simpler issue. Just recently I got a complete head re build and must say it is much more powerful and responsive. However as an s2k owner I get pretty maticulit and since running it for a week now I have gotten CEL codes for misfire in cylinder 2,3,4 and random misfire in any cylinder. I got new coils and plugs and was able to eliminate cylinder 3 misfire and only have codes for cylinder 2 and 4 misfiring.

i need help I am lost what this can be, I have adjusted valve lash twice and checked vacuum lines. Any opinions what this can be. I love the feeling of having my s2000 back but this CEL is driving to the brink!!

Also would an OBD scanner that has live data reading help determine this issue with two cylinders misfiring?

thanks everyone In advance.

Also my compression readings before the head rebuild.

1: 150 2: 160 3: 180 4: 165

After head rebuild

1: 225 2: 230 3:240 4: 242

all compression readings were done on warm engine.

mileage 111k 2002

Have you replaced the spark plug hole seals with new ones to prevent any oil getting into the coil packs and plugs?

Have you pulled the plugs to check for any oil on them? Did you check the gap on the sparkies?

Just for shits and giggles it isn't a bad idea to swap the coil packs from cyls that are misfiring to non-misfiring cyls to see if they follow. I know they're new, but I've seen crazier things. Process of elimination type of thing.

Only a few things that can cause misfires:
1. Bad spark (bad gap, old plugsl, bad coils/bad contact)
2. Valves being out of spec
3. Oil in the combustion chamber (blow by, leak from valve seal, etc)
4. Low compression

I'll check back on this.

Can a faulty fuel injector cause a misfire code? I think answer is yes. Also, random misfires can often be traced to a fuel delivery issue.
Also, maybe you mentioned this - but can a defect in the wire harness/connectors to the coils cause misfires.
OP - when you changed the plugs, were the old plugs oily? What did they look like?

+1 missed that. Fuel can 100% cause this issue as well. Most of the time it is the injectors or fuel pump like stated.

That's hawk! I do have one more thing I need to solution before I feel it's 100% in my eyes. There's a ticking noise that started a few days ago but no cel for knocking. I don't know if it's for the reason I did a valve lash adjustment while it was warm or if it's the txt but I need this noise gone. My brother told me it's probably just a valve djusmrnet I did wrong while it was warm and not cold making it to lose.

These are noisy valvetrains to begin with....but I'd post a video. Should be able to tell you whether it's the TCT or what.
