Default Check Engine Light

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to reset the check engine light? My son put a so called chip in to increase HP & Torque. He put one on his Audi Twin Turbo and said that I should do it to my "S". So one day when I was not home and he was in town he installed it into my car. It does seem to do what he says, however it does make the Check Engine light come on, so I disconnet the battery and it goes away, but once in a while it comes back. Any ideas short of removing what he did?

I don't think you can reset the light. It indicates an emission problem. Exactly where did your son get this CHIP from? I am not aware of very many that are available for under $1000.

You better find out what he did. You cannot put a "chip" into the ECU of an S2000. The EPROM in our ECUs cannot be changed or "flashed". Whatever he did, it has adversely affected the emissions control system or the sensors in the car. Resetting the CEL won't resolve anything. Until you undo what he did, the CEL will simply come back on.
In any case, here's how to reset it:

But since it will most likely come right back on, you'll have no luck with this.

Xviper, Thanks I will try it and see what happens. My son is a pilot in the Air Force and sometimes thinks he knows everything. I am going to try and track him down in TX to see what he did.

I have great admiration for all armed forces personnel and your son probably knows more stuff in his little finger than most of us can acquire in a lifetime. Unfortunately, the S2000 defies convention and has fooled a lot of people who are generally very car savvy.

Xviper. Apparently there is a Electrical Engineer that works on the C130 that also has an S2000, not sure of his rank. He created this thing that changes the timing and fuel/air mixture. I spoke with the kid and he told me that you can change between OEM settings and the more performance settings by pushing the switch that my son installed under my sterring wheel. The only problem is you can't do it when the car is turned on or you get the check engine light. If you decide to switch settings the car must be off. So far now that it has been reset no problems. Thanks for the help, JimmyB

Would your son's friend care to elaborate on this contraption? Kind of interested in how you can change the timing with the flick of a switch.

Reminds me of an old Donald Duck cartoon (as if they're not all old) where he's in the air force and is waiting eagerly to "fly" but no one will let him get on a plane. He ends up peeling potatos or something.
"But I want to fly"

Wondering if he basically made an air/fuel controller, like an SAFC. But as for timing, I don't think our ECU would allow a device to change the timing. As XViper said, our ECU is not programmable in any way shape or form. Even probably for your son's friend. (if hondata and UL can't do it.....)

Either way, I'd get it removed. Especially if it's causing a CEL. that's playing in dangerous territory, and aside from that, adding a simple device to change your air/fuel timing isn't going to do jack squat. especially since it'd have to be dyno tuned for the specifics of your car, since each car is different.

get that sucker off, whatever it is.
