clicking and whine coming from rear end?
Ok so a few months ago I started noticing a clicking sound when I make a left to pull into my driveway. I only hear the sound when the car is rolling in neutral. Now a few days ago after driving my s for about 30 min. i get off the freeway and notice a clicking coming from the rear end when the car is rolling up to a stop in neutral in a straight line. I also notice this sound through 1st and 2nd gear when I am taking off from a stop. Another symptom that I recently started having after I noticed this clicking is a droning whine under acceleration and its worse when I am on the freeway but when I ease off the throttle on the freeway the whine goes away. I did extensive searching prior to this post and already re torqued the axle nuts. I also checked for any excessive play on the axles and when I am under the car and push up and down on them they both have slight play but nothing drastic and when I move them side to side I notice the driver's side axle has a little bit of play and the right side has none. My guess would be the diff is going out but I would appreciate any advice anyone has or if anyone could chime in on past experiences they have had with these symptoms to help me diagnose the problem.

Sounds like hub and bearings to me, especially if you have a little bit of play. Keep in mind that bad bearings can eventually ruin a hub, and a bud hub can eventually ruin an axle and vice versa, so be sure your axles still good while everythings apart. Of course you will also need to replace the axle nut again to do this job.

If you replace your diff fluid regularly and dont launch it from a stop all the time, your diff SHOULD still be ok, knok on wood

The drone/whine is usually bearings, i personally had bearings that were giving me a drone, and even though i was getting zero play in the wheel, when i replaced them they were definately bad. the clicking is the little v shaped teeth that attach the hub to the axle (which you can kinda sorta see in the picture in the link above) having too much play and moving around on each other, if you have movement in there for too long you will start to wear down the teeth and will eventually get the clicking no matter how tight the axle nut is. This can originate from either a not torqued hard enough axle nut letting some things have too much play, or vibration from a bad bearing and/or bad axle loosening up the axle nut ever so slightly, it really doesnt need much to get wear and tear in there (rhyming?)

Ok that makes sense. Ill take it apart and check the bearing because it sounds like its coming from the left side or somewhat the middle rather then the right. Thanks a lot for your help. Ill let you know if that was the problem
