Clutch Rod Play

I just finished adjusting mine to "zero" freeplay from about 3/4 of an inch. Now I need a lock pin for the pedal pin. Once it stops raining I'll take it for a drive and see if the cold 2nd gear crunch is gone...

Number 2 cause of second gear grind, right up there with clutch adjment and fluid:
rusted spline

That's the transmission input shaft. The clutch disk rides on those splines. When you push the clutch, the disk is supposed to slide away from the flywheel. When the splines are rusted it hesitates and spins the transmission. Synchros can't win against that.

Why did you have to mess with the rod pin? Did you remove the rod before adjusting it? I just backed off the lock nut and adjusted under the dash. Are you supposed to remove it first?

I agree, there is no need to remove anything - just loosen the locknut (12 MM wrench) and you can turn the threaded pushrod by hand to remove the freeplay. Retighten the locknut and you are done...

I do notice that the clutch engagement point rises a bit as you release the clutch after this adjustment, so you have to get adjusted to it, particularly when starting on a hill. I left a tiny bit of clearance on mine but I tightened it up a pretty decent amount.

Assuming when you talk about play, that you mean play between rod and cylinder? Just worried a reader of this thread might misinterpret and take up play in the master cylinder. That would be a bad thing. I did't notice that much of a change in the engagement point. Very subtle for me but still helped tranny feel.

Yes I believe that is what I'm adjusting, loosen the 12mm locknut, lengthen the rod by turning it clockwise, and tightening the locknut. How do you adjust the MC ?, just asking to make sure I'm not confusing the two. thanks
