clutch/transmission problem?

i posted in my local forum also but seems like it's slow there. Well yesterday when i push in the clutch to start the car, i heard a pop sound. I thought nothing of it and started the car and with the clutch in, i couldn't get into any gears. So i decided to let the clutch out and when i tried to push the clutch in again, it would not go down at all. It's totally stuck, so did my clutch go out? I heard that when the clutch goes out, the signs is that the clutch feels hard and soft randomly and then you are locked out of all gears. What should i check for before i swap in a new clutch, shift fork, linkage?

i know it can't be the master/slave cylinder since the last time my slave cylinder went out. The clutch pedal dropped to the floor instead of being stuck at the top.

can it go into gears with the engine off?

thanks for reminding me about that, yes the shifter will go into gears without any problem with the engine off.

hmmm well typically when the clutch goes out there is no play.... you can push it down with just one finger... check your clutch fluid, top it off if its low. go through all the gears while the car is off and then try again.

i checked all my fluid and theyre all at the right level. My tranny has no problem with going into the gears with the car off. At this point, im guessing it's either the master cylinder piston. some of the other members on the local board suggest it might be something in the tranny.

Unbolt the slave cylinder. look for a mechanical problem there first.

Maybe you dont need a clutch.
