Clutch wear symptoms
 

My S2k has about 50,000miles (80,000km) on it. I notice when shifting at high RPMs from first into 2nd there is significant clutch slipping going on.

Yesterday when I was totally not traveling on an empty public road. I was rowing through the gears shifting at redline. I was doing about 100-110mph (170kph) and noticed that when I was at around 8500rpm in 4th or 5th gear, I don't quite remember which, the RPMs would drop by almost 2000rpm, with my foot still all the way down on the gas, and not touching the clutch at all. It felt like the clutch was slipping and I wasn't even shifting!

The car did smell like burnt clutch after that little run, I'm wondering if there could be anything BUT the clutch causing this issue like a messed up slave cylinder. Or is this a classic example of a worn out clutch that needs replacing? Normally I wouldn't be asking but it's unusual that a car with such low mileage needs a new clutch.

A clutch should last alot longer than your mileage depending on driving habits. I always do a simple check when i buy a car. Put the car in 2nd gear pull the E Brake and attemp to slowly move the car. If the car stalls thats a good sign if not your clutch is worn...

doesnt sound like your clutch, if you had your foot right down and your clutch was slippin the revs wouldnt go down, theyd go up!

Try the old trick: Get it into 4th gear @ 2-2.5K. go WOT. If it starts slipping, your clutch will go bye bye soon.

Just tried it - 4th gear at around 3000rpm. Floored it and just got major slipping.

How long do you typically have on a clutch once it starts slipping? My biggest fear has always been going on a long road trip (like the 800 mile trip to the Dragon) and have the clutch go out while I'm gone. Would you typically be able to limp it home?

when u do replace clutch make sure to check for fluid leakage within the clutch / tranny housing to make sure problem wont repeat.

noob question, what does slipping feel like?

Its not so much a feel, but what the engine/clutch does. For example, when you hit the gas the revs will shoot up but the mph won't. Basically, the clutch is slipping its grip on the flywheel and the engine is spinning up but its not being transfered to the wheels. When you hit the gas the mph should go up right away (at what speed depends on the gear your in).
