does the tapered side go towards engine block or pulley?

tapered end towards the block , the square end flush with the outside end of the pulley where it meets the bolt.

Thanks! Tapered side facing up or down towards the block? I tried sliding it in i wonder if the crank has to be at top dead center to slide the woodruff key back in. Ill take alook tmrw

If you look at the end of the crankshaft slot you will see it tapers as it gets closer towards the block and the taper is upwards, so the key goes in with the tapered side facing down and the two tapers fit each other tight so the key doesn't slide too far back. You can put the key in the channel with the tapered side facing down and towards the block, and then slide the pulley over the key.

Really appreciate it, i shouldve paid more attention when removing it. I figured it was part of the crankshaft and nearly $#%# myself when it popped out when removing the pulley

No worries, I just took apart my B-series Integra for a timing belt change, I had one key for each cam and the crank uses two keys, my biggest challenge is not losing the keys after they come out. They are so small and always seem to drop on the ground at inopportune times, lol. I refer to them as tic tacs

Beware, there are actually TWO slots that have to line up on the engine before this pin will slide in. There's some kind of bushing inside the engine that rotates, and it also has a slot in it. I somehow got that one and the one on the crank shaft out of alignment and spent half an hour trying to get the pin in. Finally grabbed a mirror and looked and saw that the two slots weren't lined up.

^ Bushing = crankshaft spocket (drives timing chain and oil pump)

I was experiencing a metallic slurry/scraping sound after replacing ported head/new valvetrain and fluidampr pulley. I wanted to isolate the sound so i disconnected the serpentine belt. Same sound. So i figured maybe the new crank pulley was rubbing so i just took off the pulley and cranked the engine. Woodruff key was then flung out im guessing and i ended up bending my intake valves :) So note to anyone never crank an engine without crank pulley/woodruff key installed. (Damn sound was a thermal gasket installed upside down on throttle body causing an airleak that sounded like a metallic slurry)
