so the goal here is to seal up the leaks.

but there is a breather hose that draws in fresh air from the air filter upstream of the throttle body, that would effectively re-pressurize the crank as the pcv draws the pressure out.

can someone explain what i'm missing here?
Thats a good one.
As far as i understand, and i am maybe wrong, the breather hose and the PCV valve are "Calibrated" in diamter to some extend, so that they work properly "Togehter".
The leak on the oil seal cap will bring this system out of balance.

3. What is a PCV grommet? Is that an AP1 component?

I'm chasing this same exact issue and had already replaced a slew of gaskets and bits coming to the same conclusion have, so I'm down to the final stretch to see if my oil consumption issue is resolved.

thanks
Bumpity, just wondering if someone can answer these questions? Thanks fellas...

Thanks for confirming, U.S. AP1 component.

you could use a smoke machine designed for leak testing. But they are several hundred if you don't own or have access to one...

That part I've got...what I don't know how to do is a) where do I stick the smoke into? Like what intake location (please for the love of god don't tell me to stick it in my rear end - using a Chris Farley voice) and b) do you do this while idling?

car off, put it in the front breather port on valve cover. if needed, block off the pcv.

This might also help with oil consumption issues on my wife's Subaru Outback. Some Subarus have oil consumption issues, and some don't. Thank you very much for this incredibly interesting thread!

Subaru recalled my daughters 2013 Outback for excessive oil consumption. Would run the oil down to the point the low oil pressure light came on, below the dipstick (she ignored my "check frequently" advice) . I believe they had to pull the engine to fix it. Regardless it's been fixed for a couple of years now.

Aha! Would it work better though if the car was idling so that it could pull the smoke through the system?

You also mentioned measuring the crank pressure...is this the same thing as the air/smoke test or is this something different?
