Default Crossthread doing shifter regrease. Now what?

Decided to re-grease my shifter this afternoon and all went fine. When reinstalling it can be a bit of a bitch to press down against the spring and thread the initial bolt. I got it on and tightened it down but about halfway through it got significantly harder and harder to tighten as compared to the other two. Pretty sure I cross threaded it, do'h. Not knowing much about the assembly of the transmission, what would you do? Just leave it and never do a re-grease it again? Worth re-tapping it? From what I recall there was another bracket with 4 bolts, any chance to remove that and replace?

Try a thread chaser see if you can clean it up.

Yeah, thread repair tool, not tap.

Tap cuts away any metal that isn't where its supposed to be. Thread repair tool reshapes the metal back to where its supposed to be.

Look for a thread repair kit Amazon

Yes. I use a lot of 3-in-1 oil to clean all the metal bits left behind while chasing. Then, try the threads without any spring tension to be sure they're good.

I like a little grease on the threads to help with the final tightening.

Good luck!

Future hack for future you:

Shift it into reverse. It will lock the spring.

Do you put the shifter in reverse before you take it apart?

You do it after you take it apart, just when you are attempting to put the bolts on.
