I dropped into an exhaust specialist today called Hi-Tech Mufflers. They do a lot of the exhausts for performance and show cars around Sydney.

I asked twhat they would recommend for my car and they put it up on the hoist and had a look.

In the end they suggested that the system was pretty good standard and probably my best bet was to replace the exhaust from where it splits in two back, with 2 inch pipes going into 2 inch bazooka mufflers with some nice tips on them. They say it will be less restrictive and allow more low end torque.

The bazooka mufflers are a straight through type with a perforated pipe in the middle and the muffler material around that. They are stainless steel, cylindrical and about 8 inches in diameter.

I'm sure it'll look good, I'm sure it'll sound good, but any one want to share an opinion on the affect on performance.

I doubt it will have much effect. I actually closed off one of my stock mufflers with some rags and went out and drove the car. Hand timed runs showed no perceivable difference below 6000-7000 rpm - there wasn't even improvement on the bottom (I intend to dyno this experiment to truly assess the effects).

Anyways, what this tells me, along with the incredible quietness of the stock system, is that the stock system has more than enough flow capacity for what the engine produces, or that the catalytic converter is more of a restriction than the rest of the exhaust. I've seen many Integra VTEC engines producing about as much hp as the F20C with only a 2.25" single exhaust, so the excess capacity on the F20C shouldn't be a surprise.

If I were to do a custom system, I'd want a single 2.5" system from the cat-back. I'd use one primary resonator right after the cat (with at least a 2.5" core) and then a good straight through muffler (much like your bazooka description). This would be louder than a dual muffler system, but would flow well and save you a lot of weight (the biggest advantage of an aftermarket system on this engine in stock form).

AusS200,

I have a Hi Tec 2 1/2" on a Laser Turbo 4WD and I find it very noisy even with the Turbo. I am seriously looking to putting another resonator in series to quiten it down.

With the S2K and no Turbo it would be my guess that the 2" hi-Techs would be LOUD but this is your choice

The work was done by Croyden Autosport who specialise in jap mods, can recommend their work highly, the exhaust fitting was a full 2 1/2" stainless and it fits like standard down to heat shields, etc..

This is an experiment I really want to dyno.

You might have notice the new 3 series Bimmers have a choke on one half of their exhaust which closes at low revs. It's basically adjustable back pressure.

I'd love to see if this has an effect on our car as a butterlfly on one of the exhausts operated by RPM would be so easy.

I'll look into whatr you've suggested for a cat back system.

Thanks
