Defroster install in 00 on hardtop with 02 switch

Ok so I know there are a ton of threads out there, but I haven't found one that completely answers my question. I DO know that HTG sells a kit. But I'm not about to spend over $100 when i'm sure it's just a relay and switch. I hate to make a new thread, BUT. Here's the situation:

I have an 00' with a hard top. The hard top came with a coil'ed cord on the driver side that plugs into somewhere. I DO NOT want to take out the tiny pouch behind the cup holder and get the switches for that because I will be changing to the AP2 console soon.

I just got a 02 dash defroster switch. My question is:

How do I wire that switch (02' dash defroster switch) to the hard top defroster?

anyone?

Most just get the HTG kit. You may be blazing new ground for the community. Post up a DIY when you figure it out!

You might try the Electronics forum...someone there may have tinkered with this already.

Good luck...

Well, I noticed that the fog switch on the dash doesn't stay down like the cruise switch. Where as the cruise switch that comes with the HTG kit, I think stays down.

Well from everything I've read through searches, it seems that this page:

http://home.covad.net/~floydmah/defroster.html

Has everything. The problem is that it's a DEAD link and it's useless to me. So does anyone here have that page saved on their computer?

Try sending a pm to fmah...he's the guy who made the link.

Yeah I did. No dice. Thanks though.

i have this same question...

have you figured it out yet bboixtc?

i'm thinking the AP2 switch is just one that turns it on and off, and not a 'stay-on' switch (i forgot the technical term).

i would assume that the relay and the wiring are the same as for the AP1 HTG switch, that goes behind the cup holder. However, I would probably try to find someway to wire the AP1 relay to the AP2 button under the dash.

i have none of the parts, but i'm looking into cannabalizing an AP2 so i don't have to buy any AP1 relays and harnesses

I have done some looking and question asking and it seems the problem is pretty complex. The AP2 dash switch is a momentary that starts a timer in the ecu to turn the defrost on and then off in something like five minutes, the AP1 button is an on/of clicker, you have to remember to turn it off. I don't think gutting the AP2 will work unless you are going to take the ecu as well.

I am doing the top conversion this weekend and am going to work on a solution to the dash button conversion too. from what I have gathered, using the AP2 switch to activate a small electronic timer from radioshack or similar store and wiring that to the conversion harness from HTG will do the trick.

Most of this plan has been put together while discussing the idea with Geoff from HTG. Its not a proven solution and I don't have all the details sorted yet so any input would be appreciated. If I get this thing figured out I will definitely be posting the solution as I can see there is a demand for it.

Remember what should be remembered, and forget what should be forgotten.Alter what is changeable, and accept what is mutable.
