Bunping an old thread.
Has anyone successfully retrofitted an 02-03 dash defroster switch into an 00-01? I like how cleam the dash button looks, and dont want to eliminate the change pocket if i can help it.
There is a blank button cover in the spot for it. So i imagine it can be done.
Thanks in advance.

From what I remember, the dashboard harness is different from 00-01 and 02-03.
The defroster logic (timer device) in 00-01 is within the switch, but the logic in the 02-03 cars was moved into the cluster.
This means the 02-03 dash switch will not work with the 00-01 harness. I found this out first hand, when replacing a cut dash harness.

Billman. Thank you for responding, I appreciate your input!
so you dont feel this is a worthwhile exercise. Do you think there is any way to swap the “guts” between the two switches?
FYI, my new TCT is working like a charm

You want your money back before I mail this switch out?

The easiest option would be, run a jumper harness from center console to the 02 switch.
the 02 switch doesnt latch, so you can wire in a latch circuit in your jumper harness from center console to behind the dash.
once that switch is setup to latch with a circuit in the jump harness, the rest of harness #2(hardtop defroster coiled harness), #3(defroster harness) and #4(body harness missing on some 00)and defroster relay will function as normal.
Also be aware, 00-01 use three wire hardtops, you will need to convert to 2 wire if your hardtop is 2 wire.
you will still need to purchase harness #3 and install it into the rear pilar with oem catchers.

Freq, still send the dash switch. Im going to see if there is anything that can be done.
Im adding a softtop with heated glass, not hardtop. I ordered the defrost kit from hardtopguy. If i cant somehow make it work, Im only out $10 for the dash switch.
Thanks for the input everyone! Deckoz, i may reach out to you at some point. It sounds like you have some ideas.

anyway, the green connector under the console for the defroster
If you or someone has the electrical trouble shooting manual for 02-05, you can get the pinout for the 02 switch.
Once you have that, you can use a "12v Off-Delay Relay" to mimic the time to off function in the 02 ecu, in conjunction with a momentary latching circuit
Mini Timer Time Delay Relay .1 Sec to 400 days. 3V 12V 18V 5A. Power on or Off Delay, Cycling and More
Just hook up the momentary output pin of the defroster switch to the "trigger" and setup the time for 15 minutes.
02 defroster pins 2&3 will wire to 00-01 pins 1&2(for bulbs)
just guessing based off the function of the 01 switch.
but 02 pin 1 is likely source, and 6 is output, which you probably wont need from the switch, as the relay will take this bridges place
00-01 pin 4 will be source for the relay, 00-01 pin 3 would be output from the relay. and pin 5 relay ground
depending on if 02 pin 4 and 5 are negative or positive you will have to figure out these pins to figure your trigger wire.
anyway if someone posts the 02-05 electrical troubleshooting diagram for the defroster connector, I can draw you a wiring diagram.

This is awesome. Thank you.
I have an 06/07 electrical manual, but unfortunately i think the wiring is different yet. So it may not be helpful. Ill check it out when i get home later this week.

Sure, Hardtopguys soft top defroster conversion, is basically harness #3 with the catcher switch removed.
